Function of CWDM filter

CWDM filters are designed to multiplex and demultiplex wavelength signals in metro, access and enterprise networks, as well as cable television applications. Additionally, they are often used to provide the wireless backbone for the latest 4G wireless networks (LTE). They are a low-cost approach for systems using uncooled laser sources and an alternative to more expensive DWDM components based on 100 GHz or 200 GHz channel spacing. CWDM channel filters are used to isolate channels of a specific wavelength, while CWDM channel splitters are used to isolate a channel band.

The purpose of a CWDM channel filter is to separate the signal of a single channel from a group of signals. This is achieved by allowing light of wavelengths corresponding to the CWDM channel filter to pass while all other wavelengths are reflected. The same filter can be used to add one channel's signal to a set of other channels.

The CWDM spectrum includes up to 18 channels, which can coexist with the DWDM spectrum, and for the 100GHz grid, it can provide up to 60 individual channels for fiber optic communications.
