What Is WDM Fiber Network?

February 24 , 2022

The WDM fiber network divides an optical channel into several independent channels with different wavelengths, and transmits data through a single fiber. Therefore, it provides huge bandwidth by increasing the channels on a single fiber, thereby increasing its transmission capacity.

Another breakthrough technology that enables high-speed data transmission is WDM fiber optic networking or wavelength division multiplexed fiber optic networking, which doubles the data transfer rate by using multiple optical channels in a single fiber. WDM fiber optic networks take advantage of huge bandwidth by multiplexing multiple channels on a single fiber, thereby multiplying the transmission power of the fiber.

For example, it takes a certain amount of time for us to do some work by ourselves, but when several other people come to help us with the work, more work can be done in the same time period. Similarly, in a WDM network, instead of transmitting an optical signal through a single channel in a single fiber, the optical channel is split into multiple channels for larger and faster signal transmission. These channels are independent wavelengths with different frequencies. The network utilizes non-overlapping wavelengths of different frequencies. Each wavelength supports a specific communication channel and transmits data at any speed you need. Therefore, by using multiple channels in a single fiber, the huge fiber bandwidth can be exploited, enabling the transmission of large amounts of data over longer distances in shorter time spans.

The basic principle of WDM fiber optic network is to divide an optical channel into several discrete wavelengths. Each wavelength is an independent channel that can transmit data at 2.5Gbit/s, 10Gbit/s, or even 100Gbit/s. Assuming that each channel transmits data at 10Gbit/s, if there are a total of 16 channels in a single fiber, we get a total data transfer rate of 160Gbit/s over a single fiber. If a cable has 48 fibers and each fiber is 160Gbit/s, then over a single cable, 48 fibers will give you 7680Gbit/s. Independent channels with higher data transfer rates can give you higher speeds. Additionally, with the availability of optical fibers that carry 64 or more optical channels or wavelengths, communication speeds have gained a whole new dimension. This technology not only increases the data transfer rate, but also increases the amount of data transferred, making it an ideal platform for building the backbone of the Internet.

The biggest advantage of WDM fiber optic network is that it greatly increases the capacity of the fiber optic network, while reducing the cost of fiber optic cable and equipment usage. Another major factor is that such a network requires negligible maintenance. After the WDM optical fiber network is installed, there is no need to replace the optical fiber frequently, and only the terminal equipment can be upgraded to a higher level. The use of this network has resulted in a massive explosion in global transmission capacity, revolutionizing the process of communication.
