How many channels or wavelengths can a WDM Mux Demux support?

January 05 , 2024
The number of channels or wavelengths that a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Mux Demux can support depends on the specific type of WDM technology being used. There are two main categories: Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).

CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing):
CWDM typically supports a smaller number of channels compared to DWDM.
The standard ITU-T G.694.2 defines 18 channels for CWDM, spaced at intervals of 20 nm within the 1270 nm to 1610 nm wavelength range.
However, in practice, not all these channels may be used, and the number of active channels may vary based on the specific CWDM equipment.

DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing):
DWDM allows for a much higher number of channels in a denser arrangement.
The ITU-T G.694.1 standard specifies a grid with a channel spacing of 100 GHz, corresponding to approximately 0.8 nm in the C-band (around 1530 nm to 1565 nm).
This results in the potential for dozens or even hundreds of channels within the C-band alone.

In both CWDM and DWDM systems, the specific number of channels may be determined by the capabilities of the WDM Mux Demux equipment used, the available wavelength range, and the spacing between channels. It's essential to check the specifications of the particular WDM Mux Demux device to determine the number of supported channels and the wavelength range it covers.

FiberWDM, produces various types of WDM multiplexers. Such as DWDM multiplexers, CWDM multiplexers and passive WDM components. Provide product samples, OEM & ODM services!
