In the era of efficient optical fiber network transmission and smooth evolution, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology has become the key to improving the utilization rate of optical fiber resources and realizing the coexistence of multiple services. Relying on its technical accumulation in the field of optical communication, Fiberwdm provides efficient and flexible solutions for modern access networks through its FWDM series and CEx-WDM series equipment.

Background and Challenges

As the services carried by access networks expand to high-definition video, cloud computing, and IoT applications, Fiber to the X (FTTx) has become an ideal choice due to its huge bandwidth potential, and Passive Optical Network (PON) technology has become the mainstream of wired access networks. However, network infrastructure is facing unprecedented challenges in the integration of old and new services, upgrade costs, and other aspects.

  • Intergenerational Technology Conflict: Different generations of PON technologies (such as GPON and XGS-PON) use different upstream and downstream wavelengths. The access of new-technology OLT and old-technology ONU to ODN will lead to failure to activate due to wavelength conflicts.
  • High Upgrade Costs: Traditional network upgrades require re-laying or large-scale renovation of fiber optic links, involving high material and labor costs as well as a long construction cycle.
  • Rigid Service Deployment: Traditional ODN usually only carries one type of PON service, which cannot meet the XGS-PON service needs of high-end users and the GPON+CATV service needs of ordinary households at the same time, making it impossible to achieve refined service deployment.
  • Hesitation in Investment Strategy: Operators' strategic hesitation due to concerns about new technologies obsoleting old equipment or existing assets.

Technical Principles

Our FWDM series and CEx-WDM series products are developed to solve the above core pain points. They adopt WDM technology to transmit multiple optical signals of different wavelengths simultaneously in a single optical fiber, which can efficiently realize the synthesis and separation of multi-service signals and greatly improve the utilization rate of optical fiber resources.

We offer two product series: FWDM series and CEx-WDM series, available in LGX plug-in card type or 1U integrated device type.

Product Technical Features

The FWDM series is based on thin-film filtering technology, which can accurately separate or combine optical signals of different wavelengths. This structure enables a single fiber to carry bidirectional data and unidirectional video services simultaneously, significantly improving the efficiency of optical fiber resource utilization.

  • CATV 1550nm is responsible for downstream video broadcasting services.
  • PON 1310/1490nm & XGS-PON 1270/1577nm are responsible for upstream and downstream PON services, with multi-service integration without mutual interference.
  • Low insertion loss (≤0.8dB) and high channel isolation (≥30dB).
  • High return loss (≥45dB) and wide operating temperature range (-40℃ ~ +85℃).
  • Support for personalized customization of port service types and quantities, enabling precise investment.
  • Passive device, no power supply required, reducing additional costs such as electricity fees and lowering system failure rates.

These excellent performances ensure that FWDM equipment can provide stable and reliable services in various application environments, meeting the high standards of carrier-class equipment.

CEx-WDM is a key product in the evolution of PON technology, mainly designed to ensure the smooth upgrade of PON networks and the coexistence of old and new networks.

  • GPON 1290-1330nm/1480-1550nm is responsible for upstream and downstream GPON services.
  • XGS-PON 1260-1280nm/1575-1580nm is responsible for upstream and downstream XGS-PON services.
  • NG-PON2+PtP 1524-1544nm/1596-1625nm is responsible for upstream and downstream NG-PON2+PtP services, enabling the coexistence of various old and new PON services without mutual interference and smooth upgrade.
  • OTDR 1625-1675nm is responsible for OTDR detection signals, with an OTDR optical fiber detection port to facilitate fault diagnosis.
  • Low insertion loss (GPON≤0.9dB, XGS-PON≤1.1dB, NG-PON2≤1.3dB, OTDR≤1.6dB; refer to specific products for details).
  • High channel isolation (≥30dB for all channels) and high return loss (≥55dB).
  • Support for personalized customization of port service types and quantities, enabling precise investment.
  • Passive device, no power supply required, reducing additional costs such as electricity fees and lowering system failure rates.

This design allows network operators to significantly increase network capacity by upgrading equipment at both ends without replacing the basic Optical Distribution Network (ODN), thereby significantly reducing network evolution costs.

Product Application Scenarios

  • Convergence of CATV and PON Networks
In triple play applications, FWDM series equipment multiplexes CATV's 1550nm video broadcasting signals with PON system's 1310nm/1490nm & XGS-PON 1270nm/1577nm data signals into a single optical fiber, realizing single-fiber triplex transmission and greatly saving optical fiber resources.

  • Smooth Upgrade of PON Networks
For network operators needing to evolve from GPON to XGS-PON and even NG-PON2, CEx-WDM series products provide a perfect transition solution. Existing GPON users and new XG(S)-PON users can coexist in the same ODN network. Operators can gradually upgrade user equipment according to market demand, maximizing the protection of existing investments.

Product Advantages

  • Easy Deployment: "Plug-and-play" upgrade. Deploy CEx-WDM or FWDM equipment at the central office, connect old and new OLTs to the corresponding ports of the equipment respectively, and replace the corresponding ONUs for users needing upgrades at the user end. The entire process has zero impact and zero interruption on existing users, realizing "hot upgrade".

  • Easy Operation and Maintenance: Simplified network architecture. Operators do not need to maintain multiple independent physical networks and optical fiber resources for different generations of PON technologies. All services are carried on the same physical optical fiber network, which greatly simplifies the network topology and reduces the complexity and cost of operation and maintenance.

  • Convenient Investment: Precise investment and quick return. Reduce initial investment without large-scale laying of optical fibers for new services; accelerate service launch time, significantly shortening the deployment cycle of new services; realize precise investment by upgrading equipment in areas with clear user demand and willingness to pay, improving return on investment.

  • Strategic Advantage: Maintain competitive edge at all times. In the era of 50G PON, the same ODN and the same FWDM/CEx-WDM evolution concept are still applicable. This enables operators to launch leading services at lower costs and faster speeds in competition, maintaining a competitive advantage at all times.

Summary

With the continuous expansion of 5G scale and the accelerated popularization of 10G PON home access, the demand for multi-service bandwidth in access networks is growing. Our FWDM series and CEx-WDM series equipment realize the multi-service integrated transmission of current optical fiber access networks, solve the technical challenges in network integration and upgrading, and provide a smooth path for future network evolution. These high-performance WDM equipment will play an increasingly important role in building more efficient, economical, and intelligent optical network infrastructure.
